Toronado is a dual Group 1 winning son of Champion Sire, HIGH CHAPARRAL out of a winning daughter of GRAND SLAM (by GONE WEST). He carries several key families, nicks and patterns which will benefit by reinforcement in the broodmares he covers.
Toronado’s tail female line traces to NOBLE LASSIE (1-c). This is also the family of VAGUELY NOBLE. Vaguely Noble is present in such broodmare sires as ANABAA, GREEN PERFUME, NOBLE BIJOU, GAY MECENE, ORATORIO (Ire) and in the future, daughters of TOORAK TOFF.
Toronado’s dam Wana Doo carries two NORTHERN DANCER / BUCKPASSER nicks via Grand Slam’s damsire El Gran Senor and Wana Doo’s damsire, Always Fair. A prominent influence who can further reinforce this pattern is DANEHILL (and brothers EAGLE EYED and NUCLEAR FREEZE).
NIJINSKY II is prominent in two of High Chaparral’s Group 1 winners, namely SO YOU THINK (out of a mare by Nijinsky II’s son TIGHTS) and CONTRIBUTER, whose second damsire is ROYAL ACADEMY. An additional attraction is that Toronado carries Nijinsky II’s tail female relation, El Gran Senor. Others to reinforce the TORPENHOW (8-f) line are REDOUTE’S CHOICE, RULER, MASTERCLASS, NEW REGENT, SPINNING WORLD, TRY MY BEST (sire of LAST TYCOON), FAR NORTH, THE MINSTREL, UMATILLA, XAAR, HURRICANE SKY, FREE AMERICA, GOOD JOURNEY, DR. JOHNSON, FRIENDLY RELATIONS, BEL ESPRIT, VAL ROYAL and ALI-ROYAL.
Toronado’s damsire Grand Slam traces to PLUM CAKE (9-c), who is also the ancestress of ALYDAR. Mares by such broodmare sires as ASTRONOMER ROYAL, BITE THE BULLET, ORATORIO (Ire), HARD SPUN and DUKE OF MARMALADE carry Alydar.
Toronado carries three lines to Northern Dancer, from the influential ALMAHMOUD (2-d) family. Other members in broodmares, such as HALO, DANEHILL, EXIT TO NOWHERE, ORPEN, WAY OF LIGHT, MACHIAVELLIAN, ESPERERO, CANNONADE, NUCLEAR FREEZE, CATRAIL, EAGLE EYED, EL MOXIE, YOUTHFUL LEGS, L’EMIGRANT and ARCTIC TERN, will reinforce this dominant family.
As a grandson of Sadler’s Wells, Toronado should respond well to reinforcement of this, the GOODY TWO SHOES (5-h) family. Apart from Sadler’s Wells’ brothers TATE GALLERY and FAIRY KING and three quarter brother NUREYEV, influences in mares such as THATCH, his son THATCHING, VAL DE LOIR, RIDAN, LORENZACCIO, MARQUIS DE SADE, GEIGER COUNTER, YEATS, INFLATE, WINDSOR SLIPPER, FOX MYTH, REFORM, PERUGINO, CAMPO CATINO, TOPSIDER, FESTIVAL HALL, NORTHERN METEOR and OPEN DAY are appealing for Toronado.
High Chaparral’s dual Group 1 winner MONACO CONSUL is out of a mare by STAR WAY, who is damsire of ENCOSTA DE LAGO, a damsire that also contributes FAIRY KING (see above). Encosta De Lago also sex balances Mr. PROSPECTOR for Toronado.
Toronado carries three NASRULLAH / PRINCEQUILLO nicks via Mill Reef, Secretariat and Christmas Bonus (granddam of Gland Slam). These can be either replicated or reversed by the presence of influences such as DIGNITAS, RIVERMAN, CHIEFTAIN, GODSWALK, FIRST CONSUL, IMPERIALIST, DEDICATED RULLAH, WITHOUT FEAR, KEY TO THE KINGDOM, TARGOWICE, BOLD LAD (USA), KRIS S. and TASH (dam of MUKADDAMAH).
Gone West, Round Table and Atan in Toronado are members of the ALOPE (2) family. DOUTELLE, KNOWN FACT, FOXLAW, ALCIDE, ABOVE SUSPICION, MUKDDAAM, SONG OF TARA, PARTHIA and KNIGHT COMMANDER are other members to seek. Sons of ROUND TABLE, such as DIGNITAS, KNIGHTLY MANNER, BRAHMS, BALDRIC II, BEAU BRUMMEL and POKER will create a desirable sex balanced duplication with Toronado.
The SCHIAPARELLI (8) family has Sassafras (third damsire of Toronado) as its representative. ASSERT, LAST TYCOON, CELTIC SWING, KING’S LAKE, DOGGER BANK, ROI DAGOBERT, IRISH BALL, BIKALA and MASTHEAD will reinforce this line.
Danzig (via Wana Doo) works very well with STAR KINGDOM, with many stakes winners bred on this cross. High Chaparral has also enjoyed success with Star Kingdom, with Group 1 winners DUNDEEL and DESCARADO carrying this line through their dams. Mares with BLETCHINGLY and sons (including CANNY LAD), LUSKIN STAR, MARSCAY, COVETOUS, HURRICANE SKY, KAORU STAR, MADE OF GOLD and SEMIPALATINSK appeal.
High Chaparral has worked very well with the SIR TRISTRAM line, principally through his son, ZABEEL. Group 1 winners DUNDEEL and FENWAY plus a further four Group winners are bred on this cross. Other descendants of Sir Tristram to look for include GROSVENOR, KAAPSTAD, OCTAGONAL, LONHRO, DEVARAJA and MILITARY PLUME.
The GREEN DESERT sire line has also worked very well with High Chaparral, with three Group Winners (including Group 1 winner WROTE) bred on this cross. Green Desert can be sourced via damsires such as CAPE CROSS, DESERT SUN, DESERT PRINCE, KHELEYF, OASIS DREAM, VOLKSRAAD, SHINKO FOREST, LACRYMA CRISTI, MAGIC RING, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT and his son I AM INVINCIBLE.
