With the Group winners from 12 crops of racing age available to analyse, Choisir has shown a strong connection with the GOODY TWO SHOES family, principally via SADLER’S WELLS, his brother FAIRY KING (sire of ENCOSTA DE LAGO, FALBRAV, SHINKO KING etc) and three-quarter brother NUREYEV. These three alone are present in 15 of his 51 Group winners (30%). Other tail female members of this line to produce stakes winners with Choisir include Dreamscape, Thatching, Ahonoora and Apalachee, bringing it up to 20 of his 51 stakes winners (40%).
ENCOSTA DE LAGO mares have produced two of Choisir’s eleven Group 1 winners and four Group winners overall.
Sons of Sadler’s Wells, CARNEGIE and MONTJEU, have produced a Group 1 winner each, with Montjeu producing a further three Group winners with Choisir. Other sons and grandsons of Sadler’s Wells to seek in mares for Choisir include SCENIC, ENTREPRENEUR, EL PRADO (sons MEDAGLIA D’ORO, ARTIE SCHILLER), HIGH CHAPARRAL (SO YOU THINK, DUNDEEL etc) and sons of Montjeu including TAVISTOCK, NOM DE JEU, CAMELOT and AUTHORIZED.
Nureyev is damsire of ZABEEL, who is in the pedigrees of four Group winners by Choisir, while Nureyev’s son SOVIET STAR is damsire of UK Group 2 winner, Rajasingh. PEINTRE CELEBRE, STRAVINSKY, POLAR FALCON, PIVOTAL and SINGSPIEL are among other Nureyev damsires to seek for Choisir.
HALO line broodmares are good candidates for mating with Choisir. A close relation to Northern Dancer and Danehill, he can be sourced via DON’T SAY HALO, MORE THAN READY, DEVIL’S BAG, FUJI KISEKI and SUNDAY SILENCE. Group 1 winner The Mission’s dam is out of a More Than Ready mare, while Group 2 winner Gold Water is out of a Devil’s Bag mare.
The SIR TRISTRAM line is another favoured by Choisir. Sir Tristram is damsire of Group 1 winner Sacred Choice and maternal grandsire of Group 1 winner Historian (dam by MARAUDING) as well as Group 2 winner Music Bay (via KAAPSTAD). As mentioned, his son ZABEEL appears in the maternal pedigrees of four of Choisir’s 51 stakes winners. Other Sir Tristram sources in mares include PIERRO, LONHRO, SAVABEEL, SOVEREIGN RED, EL QAHIRA, DON EDUARDO, MILITARY PLUME, GROSVENOR and DR. GRACE. Daughters or granddaughters of OCTAGONAL and KAAPSTAD are particularly good, as Pieces of Eight, who is prominent in Octagonal and Kaapstad, is a member of the BLACK DUCHESS family, which is strong in Choisir’s pedigree.
Mares carrying valuable influence KENMARE have also been successful with Choisir, producing Group 3 winners Uxorius (KELTRICE) and Lady Springbank (KENDOR).
KRIS, DIESIS and KEEN are sons of Sharpen Up, who appears through a daughter in Choisir’s pedigree. Sex balancing Sharpen Up should have good speed implications.
The TORPENHOW family, headed by NIJINSKY II who appears in the dams of five of Choisir’s Group winners, is also represented by REDOUTE’S CHOICE (Group 1 winner The Mission), THE MINSTREL (in the pedigree of Group 1 winner Choice Bro) and EL GRAN SENOR (in the pedigree of Group 3 winner I Am Serious). Other carriers of this family include ROYAL ACADEMY, RUBICK, AL MAHER, MANHATTAN RAIN, LAST TYCOON, MASTERCLASS, SPINNING WORLD and O’REILLY.
Danzig line sires FOXHOUND, BIANCONI, GRAND LODGE, REDOUTE’S CHOICE and DANZERO (the latter two by Danehill) have all produced Group winners with Choisir, who is one of the few Danehill line stallions that works well with more sire line Danehill up close.
Sons of BISCAY will create a sex balanced duplication of this influential ancestor, who works so well with the Danehill line. MARSCAY and BLETCHINGLY are examples, the latter also from the family of Danzig and Rockefella in Choisir.
