This stallion has a long record of stakes winners from which we can learn.
His eight Group One winners come from a variety of damsire lines.
Ancient Song is out of a BEAU SOVEREIGN mare. This represents the Grey Sovereign line, which is easily accessed through KENMARE and his sons; JEUNE, KALAGLOW and KAMPALA line mares.
He creates a fantastic outcross for the proliferation of DANZIG / DANEHILL line mares. Rosehill Guineas winner He’s No Pie Eater is out of a mare by Danzig sire ASCOT KNIGHT. He also has a SW out of a DANEHILL mare and another three stakes place getters. NORTHERN DANCER line mares in general account for another 13 black type performers.
Canny Lad has worked well with other Star Kingdom line dam sires. Group One winner Accomplice is out of a COVETOUS mare, with SW’s Luther (GYSPSY KINGDOM), Given (COVETOUS), Gullible (KAORU STAR) and SP’s Amazing One (COVETOUS), Oak Valley (MARSCAY), Progress (IMPOSING), Quiet Style (RIVER ROUGH) and Craigisla (STAR SHOWER) his other black type representatives.
Other Hyperion line dam sires to work with Canny Lad include VAGUELY NOBLE, METAL PRECIEUX (2 SW’s, Planchet and Greeting) and GALLEON.
The Turn-to line has also been successful with Canny Lad. Dual Group One winner Republic Lass is out of a COX’S RIDGE mare, while Canny Jack and Trader Vic are out of mares by GROSVENOR. IMPERIAL PRINCE mares have also produced two stakes winners. Other SIR TRISTRAM line broodmares also appeal.
The VAIN line is also proven with Canny Lad. This cross has produced Group One winner Preserve plus Rio Osa and All Black Gold by Vain’s son COUNTY.
The MR. PROSPECTOR line has produced Group One winner Calveen by VARICK. Other Mr. Prospector sons include HUSSONET, RHYTHM, WOODMAN, STRAIGHT STRIKE, UMATILLA, GEIGER COUNTER, BELLOTTO, EL MOXIE, JADE ROBBERY, distorted humor, END SWEEP, INFLATE, VETTORI, THUNDER GULCH and SECRET SAVINGS.
Other sire lines to produce top class racehorses with Canny Lad include CRESTED WAVE (Cannsea), ZAMAZAAN (Dodge), RED ANCHOR (Hire), Play Around (RORY’S JESTER), Gallopini (RANCHER) and CENTAINE (Prisoner of Love).
